City of Savannah: Official News, Events & Community Updates

Key takeaways
  • Attend the Floodplain Management Plan Meeting virtually on Wednesday, Oct. 29, 5:30 p.m. to provide input.
  • Complete the online survey at savannahga.gov/floodsurvey to identify flood-prone areas and risks.
  • Update focuses on repetitive flooding, critical infrastructure, vulnerable properties, and prioritizing flood mitigation projects.
  • Community input helps improve the City’s FEMA Community Rating System (CRS) rating, lowering flood insurance premiums.

SAVANNAH – The City of Savannah’s Development Services Department is seeking input from the public to help develop an update to the Floodplain Management Plan, a standalone document that helps reduce or eliminate risk to people and property from flood hazards.

Residents and business owners are invited to help shape a safer, more resilient community by participating through a virtual meeting or by providing input through an online survey. Data provided will help guide staff in the development of the plan and is key to identifying flood-prone areas, assessing risks, and developing strategies to reduce future flood losses.

The Floodplain Management Plan’s update will focus on areas with historical and repetitive flooding, critical infrastructure and vulnerable properties, long-term strategies to reduce future flood impacts, what key flood mitigation projects should be prioritized, and what grant funding should be sought.

Updating the plan with community input helps the City of Savannah maintain and improve its rating in the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) Community Rating System (CRS). A higher CRS rating lowers flood insurance premiums for property owners insured through the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP).

The plan is part of an annual Flood Hazard Mitigation Plan which helps reduce flood insurance premiums by 25 percent for Savannah homeowners and aids the City’s Water Resources Department in ongoing floodplain and storm water management efforts.

What: Floodplain Management Plan Meeting

When: Wednesday, Oct. 29, 5:30 p.m.
