City of Savannah’s Forsyth Park Fountain, Park & Tree Commission Receive Prestigious Awards
SAVANNAH – The City of Savannah’s restoration of historic Fountain at Forsyth Park has been honored with the prestigious Chairman’s Award by the Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation. The award was presented as part of a statewide recognition of 28 preservation projects and individuals making significant contributions to protecting Georgia’s historic resources.
The Chairman’s Award, given by the chairman of the Georgia Trust, recognizes a person or project of exceptional significance in the field of historic preservation and is bestowed as part of a statewide recognition of 28 preservation projects and individuals who have made significant contributions to protecting Georgia’s historic resources. In fact, for nearly 50 years, the Georgia Trust has recognized preservation projects and individuals across the state based on their impact to the community and adherence to national standards for historic preservation.
This recognition highlights the City’s continued commitment to preserving one of Savannah’s most iconic and historically significant landmarks, known as Savannah’s crown jewel.
“This award is important because it recognizes the importance of preservation, especially for something as beloved as our historic Forsyth Park Fountain,” said Brent Boyd, division director for Historic Parks and Squares.
For the first time in more than 30 years, the fountain, originally installed in 1858, underwent renovations. Completed in December 2025, the upgrades carefully preserve the fountain’s historic integrity while ensuring its longevity for future generations.
The project was led by the City of Savannah Park & Tree Department’s Historic Parks and Squares Division, in collaboration with Robinson Iron Works, Landmark Preservation, Pineapple Fountain, Pool and Spa, and Integrated Power Connections. Each partner played a critical role in restoring the fountain’s intricate cast-iron elements, structural components, mechanical systems, and surrounding infrastructure.
For the City of Savannah’s Park and Tree Commission’s outstanding work and contribution to this effort, locally, the Historic Savannah Foundation (HSF) presented its Stewardship Award “for their care and restoration of the Forsyth Park Foundation.
The Fountain is an icon of Savannah and Park and Tree’s continued care for it represents the hard work it takes to ensure Savannah’s parks remain beautiful places for our community to enjoy,” said Collier Neely, president & CEO, Historic Savannah Foundation. “HSF is pleased to see this project completed. We hope to see this type of excellence and care in the future preservation projects across Savannah’s parks and squares.
