Style Spotlight: Looks, Trends & Fashion Inspiration

    Key takeaways
    • Dorothy Dandridge loved the alluring fragrance Tabu by Dana, adding irresistible glamour to her screen presence.
    • Her face and physique were her calling card, so she stayed camera ready and glamorous for every spotlight.
    • She became the first Black woman on Life Magazine and signed with Twentieth Century-Fox for major stardom.
    • Dandridge used a granular face scrub to exfoliate, keeping skin smooth and cheeks rosy for screen-worthy glow.
    • Today granular scrubs are available, but choose gentler formulas if you have sensitive skin.

We live deep in the age of video and photography. We take pictures with friends, families and for important events. We post ourselves on social media to help others learn skills or about interesting topics and hotspots. However, to look your best during these very public situations you need great looking skin. Therefore, why not seek out some advice from a gorgeous Old Hollywood starlet who knew a thing or two about looking amazing onscreen? For this reason, let’s look into Dorothy Dandridge beauty secrets which included using a face scrub.

Dandridge had a plethora of delectable beauty secrets. For instance, she loved fragrances in order to help completely captivate those around her. As Town and Country journal confirmed,

“The first black woman to be nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress, Dorothy Dandridge wore Tabu by Dana, a sexy fragrance that was supposedly created by perfumer Jean Carles with the risqué instructions to make a scent that a [“lady of pleasure”] would wear.”

Oh la la… However, it was her face and physique that she knew to be her calling card. And she needed to be ready for the spotlight at all times. Since Hollywood was ready and itching to propel her to new heights.

You see, shortly after the release of CARMEN JONES, Dandridge became the first Black woman to appear on the cover of Life Magazine. And by the following year she had signed a three-year contract with Twentieth Century-Fox. A studio that intended to launch her as the first African American female screen star.

And when there’s an opportunity for thousands to see your face, you want to look as glowingly glamorous as possible. To achieve such facial eliteness, Dandridge would utilize face scrubs. A product for skin exfoliation.

Women in Dorothy’s era knew what we still know today. Giving your skin a nice scrubbing has benefits. By regularly exfoliating your skin, you help remove dead skin cells and unclog pores, reducing the risk of acne and breakouts. Plus, it can even help fade stubborn acne scars and hyperpigmentation over time.

Unfortunately, there are not many sources available that can tell us the exact product Dorothy was using back in the day. However, one single book entitled, Everything and Nothing dropped one tiny light on the subject. It revealed that Dandridge opted to use a granular facial scrub which kept her skin smooth and cheeks red.

Are there still granular facial scrubs available today? Yes! However, if you have sensitive skin you may want to reach for versions that are specially formulated not to be as “rough.”
