For Lionell Tillman, advocacy is not simply a profession—it is a deeply personal calling shaped by adversity, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to children and families. Through his lived experiences, he has transformed personal hardship into a national movement dedicated to strengthening parental involvement, promoting healthy co-parenting, and ensuring that children have every opportunity to thrive. As the founder of the Children Need Both Foundation, Lionell has become a respected voice in conversations surrounding parental rights, family stability, and child well-being. His work transcends policy debates, focusing instead on restoring hope, empowering parents, and reminding society that healthy families remain the cornerstone of thriving communities. In this exclusive interview with Heart & Soul Magazine, Lionell reflects on the experiences that shaped his purpose, the lessons that continue to guide his journey, and his vision for a future where every child benefits from the love, guidance, and presence of both fit and committed parents.

Your life story has been marked by adversity, perseverance, and transformation. What experiences shaped your commitment to becoming an advocate for parents and children?

My commitment to advocacy was forged through both profound personal loss and transformative life experiences. Losing my father at a young age gave me an intimate understanding of the emotional void created by the absence of a parent, while my own experiences navigating the family court and child support systems exposed the challenges countless parents face every day. I witnessed how easily families can become overwhelmed, discouraged, and disconnected without access to clear guidance or meaningful support. Rather than allowing those experiences to define me through bitterness, I chose to transform them into purpose. Today, my mission is to educate, empower, and equip parents with the knowledge and resources necessary to remain active, informed, and engaged in the lives of their children.

You often say that every child deserves both parents. What does that statement mean to you on a personal level, and why has it become the foundation of your life’s work?

For me, this message has always been centered on the well-being of the child. Every child deserves the opportunity to receive love, guidance, emotional support, and positive influence from both fit and committed parents whenever possible. This philosophy is not about choosing sides between mothers and fathers; it is about recognizing that children flourish when both parents are encouraged to play meaningful roles in their development. As a father, I have witnessed firsthand how intentional parental involvement strengthens a child’s confidence, identity, and sense of security. That conviction has become the cornerstone of my life’s work and continues to inspire everything we do through the Children Need Both Foundation.

How did your own experiences with the child support system influence your decision to educate, empower, and advocate for families across the country?

My experiences revealed just how essential knowledge is when navigating complex family systems. I dedicated years to researching, studying, and understanding the laws, policies, and processes that affect millions of families nationwide. What became clear was that far too many parents make life-changing decisions without access to accurate information or practical guidance. Once I realized that my experiences could help others avoid confusion, make informed decisions, and maintain stronger relationships with their children, I embraced the responsibility to share what I had learned. Advocacy became an extension of service.

As a husband, father, entrepreneur, author, and advocate, how do you balance the demands of leadership while remaining present for your family?

I’ve learned that true success is measured not only by professional accomplishments but also by the quality of our relationships at home. My family is not something I attempt to fit into my schedule—they are the reason I create my schedule in the first place. I intentionally protect time for the people I love, remain fully present during those moments, and prioritize meaningful connection over constant activity. Leadership begins within the family, and I believe our greatest legacy is established by how faithfully we show up for those closest to us.

Many people know you for challenging existing systems, but what do you hope your broader legacy will be when it comes to strengthening families and communities?

I hope my legacy is ultimately defined not by the systems I challenged, but by the lives I helped strengthen. I want to be remembered as someone who inspired meaningful dialogue, united communities, and encouraged healthier relationships between parents and their children. If future generations experience stronger families, greater parental involvement, and healthier communities because of the work we are doing today, then I will consider that a life well lived and a legacy worth leaving.

Through the Children Need Both Foundation, you have worked to elevate conversations around co-parenting, parental rights, and child well-being. What changes would you most like to see in how society supports families?

I would like to see our society place far greater emphasis on prevention rather than intervention. Families deserve access to education, counseling, communication tools, and co-parenting resources before relationships reach a crisis point. We should invest in programs that help parents collaborate more effectively, resolve conflict constructively, and remain actively involved in their children’s lives. I also believe there should be greater recognition of the invaluable role fathers play in healthy child development, alongside policies that prioritize the long-term emotional and developmental well-being of children above all else.

What have you learned about resilience, forgiveness, and personal growth through your journey that could inspire others facing seemingly impossible circumstances?

My journey has taught me that adversity often becomes the birthplace of purpose. Resilience is not the absence of hardship; it is the determination to continue moving forward despite it. I have also discovered that forgiveness is one of the greatest gifts we can give ourselves. It frees us from carrying burdens that hinder our own growth. Most importantly, I have learned that our circumstances never have the final word. Our choices, our mindset, and our willingness to grow ultimately shape the future we create for ourselves and for those who follow us.

Heart & Soul celebrates individuals who are creating meaningful impact. What message would you like to leave with parents, community leaders, and policymakers about the role we all play in securing a brighter future for children?

The future of every community is determined by how intentionally we invest in today’s children. Parents, educators, community leaders, policymakers, faith leaders, and advocates all share a collective responsibility to create environments where children can flourish. We must prioritize family stability, encourage meaningful parental involvement, and provide opportunities that allow every child to reach their fullest potential. When we strengthen families, we strengthen communities. My message remains simple yet profoundly important: every child deserves the opportunity to benefit from the love, guidance, and presence of both fit and committed parents, and each of us has a role to play in making that vision a reality.
