Black Athletes in the Spotlight: HBCU Sports & Local Highlights
- Georgia dominated Austin Peay, winning 28-6 with a stingy defense holding them to 196 total yards.
- Georgia Tech rolled Gardner-Webb 59-12 behind freshman Aaron Philo and a powerful rushing attack.
- Falcons dropped season opener 23-20 to Tampa Bay; Michael Penix threw for 298 yards, Bijan Robinson had 100 receiving yards.
SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) – SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) – Another week of college football is now in the books. Here is a quick recap and preview of the games taking place this weekend around Georgia.
#6 Georgia vs Austin Peay – The Georgia Bulldogs come out of week two with a second straight victory as they get a 28-6 win over Austin Peay. The Georgia defense held the Governors to 196 yards of total offense on the day.
Junior playcaller Gunner Stockton finished the day 26 of 34 for 227 yards through the air. All of Georgia’s points came due to their ground attack as Sophomore RB Nate Frazier and Freshman RB Chauncey Bowens combined for 125 rushing yards and four rushing touchdowns on the day.
Georgia will now head out on the road for a matchup of two top 15 teams as they go into Knoxville to take on #15 Tennessee. The Volunteers are also currently 2-0 on the year.
Kickoff for the game is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. on ABC.
Georgia Southern at USC – Georgia Southern enters week three still in search of their first win as the Eagles fell to USC 59-20 in week two.
Junior QB JC French was 19 of 35 on the day for 179 yards and two touchdowns to go along with one interception. Freshman QB Weston Bryan also connected on his only pass of the day for a 32-yard touchdown.
Camden Brown accounted for two of the Eagles’ three receiving touchdowns as the Senior wide receiver had three catches for 75 yards. Senior WR Dalen Cobb accounted for the other touchdown grab on his way to six catches for 59 yards on the day.
Georgia Southern now returns home to take on the 1-1 Jacksonville State Gamecocks. This game can be found on ESPN+ with kickoff set for 7:00 p.m.
Georgia Tech at Gardner-Webb – The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets went another week without putting anything in the loss column with a 59-12 win over Gardner-Webb.
With Senior Haynes King sidelined by injury, the Yellow Jackets were led by Freshman QB Aaron Philo. Philo was 21 of 28 on the day for 373 yards. He had one touchdown and one interception in the game.
Georgia Tech’s ground attack was responsible for most of the team’s touchdowns with five rushing TDs on the day. Junior RB Malachi Hosley accounted for two rushing touchdowns and 100 yards on nine carries. Senior RB Jamal Haynes also had two rushing touchdowns and 92 yards on nine carries.
Georgia Tech will stay home for a second week in a row as they prepare to take on 1-1 Clemson. The Tigers are currently the #12 team in the country. Kickoff is scheduled for Saturday at noon on ESPN.
Savannah State vs Edward Shorter University – The Tigers have gotten back to .500 on the year with a 13-0 home win over Shorter University.
Savannah State’s offense was led by the play of Redshirt-Junior QB Christian Burks, who was 15 of 29 for 188 yards and one touchdown on the day. Burks’ only TD on the day was a 13-yard pass to Cinsere Clark. The Senior WR finished his day with seven catches for 84 yards.
The Tigers will now look to keep the wins coming as they head on the road to take on the 0-2 Miles College Golden Bears. Kickoff is set for 3:00 p.m. at Albert J. Sloan-Alumni Stadium in Fairfield, Alabama.
Atlanta Falcons vs Tampa Bay Buccaneers – The Falcons’ season did not get off to the start the team would have liked as they fell 23-20 to their NFC South division rival, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
In his first season opener as a starter, second-year Quarterback Michael Penix went 27 of 42 for 298 yards and one touchdown. Penix Jr. also had a rushing touchdown on the day as he contributed 21 yards to the ground attack on six carries.
While he was less than effective on the ground, Falcons star RB Bijan Robinson led the team in receiving on the day. Robinson had six catches for 100 yards and one touchdown.
The Falcons had a chance to tie it up at the end of the game, but fell just short following a missed 44-yard field goal by kicker Younghoe Koo.
Atlanta will look to rebound as they head North to take on the 1-0 Minnesota Vikings. This game will be a rematch of sorts for the two young QBs, as last time they faced each other was in January of 2024 when Penix Jr. and the Washington Huskies faced off against J.J. McCarthy and the Michigan Wolverines in the CFB National Championship.
Kickoff for the game is scheduled for 8:20 p.m. Sunday on NBC.
