Savannah-Chatham County Board of Public Education Appoints Mary Snowden to District 2 Seat

The Savannah-Chatham County Board of Public Education has appointed longtime district educator Mary Snowden to fill the vacant District 2 seat.

The Board voted on Tuesday, April 7, 2026, to appoint Snowden following a public interview process. The vacancy occurred after the previous board member left the seat to pursue another public office.

Snowden brings nearly three decades of classroom experience to the Board. She served as a teacher with Savannah-Chatham County Public School System from 1989 to 2018, retiring after 29 years of service. Following her retirement, Snowden returned to the district to serve for an additional year in 2023, continuing her commitment to public education.

Snowden said her decision to seek the appointment was rooted in a desire to continue supporting students, educators and families throughout the district, drawing on her firsthand experience in SCCPSS classrooms.

In addition to her work in education, Snowden has experience serving on other public boards. She currently serves as the City of Savannah resident representative on the Chatham Area Transit (CAT) Board of Directors, where she serves alongside local and regional leaders overseeing public transportation in Chatham County.   She also serves on the Board of Directors for the Economic Opportunity Authority.

Snowden will serve as the District 2 representative until the next regularly scheduled election for the seat, as provided by state law.
