Savannah State University is proud to announce the appointment of Ms. LeAndrea Mikell as Assistant Vice President for Government and Community Relations. An accomplished SSU alumna, Mikell brings extensive expertise in government relations, strategic communications, community engagement, economic development, and higher education to this leadership position.

In her role, Mikell will oversee presidential and institutional communications and lead the development of strategies related to governmental affairs, corporate partnerships, economic development, and community relations. Her work will play a key role in advancing SSU’s mission, fostering strong external relationships, and enhancing the university’s impact both locally and beyond.

A results-driven leader, Mikell has served in several capacities at Savannah State, most recently as Executive Director of Governmental Relations & Community Engagement, where she helped secure nearly $20 million in state and federal funding, expanded the university’s visibility through strategic communications, and strengthened partnerships with government, corporate, and community stakeholders. She also played a central role in hosting high-profile events—such as the on-campus filming of ESPN’s First Take and the historic visit of the Dutch Royal Couple—showcasing Savannah State University on national and global stages.

“Ms. Mikell has been instrumental in elevating Savannah State University’s profile and impact,” said President Dr. Jermaine Whirl. “Her leadership, strategic insight, and unwavering dedication to our mission have made her an invaluable member of our team. I am confident that in her new role, LeAndrea will continue to foster collaboration, deliver meaningful results, and help guide SSU toward an even brighter future.”

Mikell also served as Interim Vice President for University Advancement (2023–2024), where she led her team to achieve year-over-year fundraising growth, including a record-breaking $412,000 raised at SSU’s annual scholarship gala.

Deeply committed to service, she currently serves on the boards of Union Mission, Employability, and Leadership Savannah. Her leadership has been recognized with numerous honors, including Emerging Leader of the Year by the Southeast Georgia Leadership Forum (2025), Georgia Trend’s 40 Under 40 (2022), and a Congressional Honor from Congressman Buddy Carter (2022). She is also a graduate of Leadership Savannah, Leadership Southeast Georgia, and Leadership Georgia.

“I am grateful for the opportunity to serve my alma mater in this capacity,” said Mikell. “Savannah State has a proud history of shaping leaders and driving impact in this community and beyond. I look forward to continuing to work with the campus community to strengthen our partnerships, expand our reach, and tell our story for generations to come.”
