SSU Breaks HBCU Volleyball Home Attendance Record, Sweeps Allen

With a crowd of nearly 1,500 people on hand in Tiger Arena on Thursday evening, Savannah State swept their volleyball match from Allen with scores of 25-19, 25-23, 25-22.

The win gives Savannah State a 8-4 overall record and a 4-2 record in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

Savannah State’s crowd of 1,488 set a new HBCU attendance record of the largest crowd to watch a volleyball match, snapping the 1,024 fans that saw the Alabama vs. Alabama State match last season in Montgomery.

Feeling the energy of the crowd, the Lady Tigers got off to a good start and had a strong finish in all three sets which led them to victory.

In the first set, Allen trailed 20-17 but Savannah State scored four of the next five points to go ahead 24-18.

SSU was down 17-13 in the second set but used a 6-2 rally tied the set at 19. Savannah State then strung together a 5-1 spurt to go in front 24-21.

Allen scored six unanswered points to take a 18-14 lead in the third set but the Lady Tigers answered with a 6-1 run to go ahead 20-19. With the score knotted at 20, the teams continued to trade points but SSU was able to survive.

Savannah State was led by Savannah Everett (13 kills), Iyonna Pike (three blocks), Amiyah Walker (21 assists) and Saniaa Dickey (21 digs). Aaliyah Saunders, Kira Raby and Aniyah Parks all had one ace.

SSU will participate in the SIAC Crossover on October 10-11 in Memphis, Tennessee.
