These Sticky Orange Chicken Wings are everything you want in the perfect appetizer—crispy, juicy chicken wings coated in a glossy sweet and spicy orange glaze that”s bursting with fresh citrus flavor. Seasoned with a savory blend of herbs and spices before being baked to golden perfection, the wings are tossed in a homemade honey orange sauce made with freshly squeezed oranges, orange marmalade, garlic, butter, and just the right amount of heat for an irresistible sticky finish. Gluten-free, Freezer, + Make Ahead options!

Can I be honest, ya’ll? These Spicy Orange Chicken Wings are my latest obsession, and I truly love the citrus twist that comes with these savory bites. While traditional buffalo wings like these Classic Oven Baked Buffalo Wings or Crispy Buffalo Popcorn Chicken, are a crowd-pleaser, adding orange to the mix truly takes things to the next level. If you’re looking for the ultimate combination of sweet, sticky, and spicy, these chicken wings deliver big, bold flavor in every bite. Perfectly seasoned chicken wings are baked until golden and crispy before being coated in a homemade honey orange glaze that’s made with fresh orange juice, orange marmalade, garlic, butter, and a touch of heat. The result is a restaurant-worthy wing recipe that’s incredibly easy to make at home.

Unlike traditional buffalo wings, these sticky orange wings strike the perfect balance between bright citrus, rich honey, savory garlic, and warming spices. Every bite is coated in a glossy glaze that caramelizes beautifully, creating that irresistible finger-licking finish everyone loves. They’re sweet enough for those who enjoy classic glazed wings but have just enough spice to keep every bite exciting.

Whether you’re serving them for game day, family dinners, holiday gatherings, cookouts, or as a party appetizer, these sweet and spicy honey orange chicken wings are guaranteed to be a hit. Pair them with creamy ranch, blue cheese, roasted vegetables, or crispy fries for a meal that’s comforting, flavorful, and impossible to resist. Plus, if you’re a fan of chicken wings in general, then you must try these Baked Jamaican Jerk Chicken Wings, Sticky Gochujang Chicken Wings, and even these Lemon Pepper Cauliflower Wings and Crispy Buffalo Cauliflower Wings/Bites for all of my meatless-loving peeps!

What Makes These Sticky Orange Chicken Wings So Good?

The secret to these wings is the perfect balance of flavors. Fresh orange juice adds bright citrus notes, while orange marmalade creates a rich, caramelized sweetness. Honey gives the glaze its signature sticky finish, and garlic, herbs, and red pepper flakes add savory depth with just the right amount of heat.

The result is a wing that’s crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside, and coated in a glossy glaze that’s sweet, tangy, buttery, and slightly spicy.

    What Is Honey Orange Glaze?

Honey orange glaze is a sweet-and-savory sauce made by combining fresh orange juice, honey, butter, garlic, and citrus preserves into a thick, glossy coating.

Unlike traditional barbecue sauce, a honey orange glaze is lighter, brighter, and more citrus-forward while still delivering plenty of rich, sticky flavor.

    It’s delicious on:

    • Chicken wings
    • Drumsticks
    • Chicken thighs
    • Salmon
    • Shrimp
    • Meatballs
    • Grilled vegetables

How to Make Sticky Orange Chicken Wings

Start by patting the chicken wings completely dry before tossing them with the seasoning blend and cornstarch. Arrange them in a single layer on a baking rack or parchment-lined baking sheet and bake until the skin is golden, crispy, and cooked through.

While the wings bake, prepare the sticky orange glaze by simmering butter, garlic, fresh orange juice, orange marmalade, honey, orange peel, and red pepper flakes until fragrant. Stir in the cornstarch slurry and cook until the sauce becomes thick, glossy, and perfectly sticky.

Once the wings are finished baking, toss them in the warm glaze until every piece is evenly coated. Garnish with fresh orange slices, orange zest, chopped parsley, or sliced green onions, and serve immediately while they’re hot and irresistibly crispy.

    Ingredients

    • Chicken Wings. The star of the recipe! Chicken wings become juicy on the inside and crispy on the outside when properly seasoned and baked. Both drumettes and wingettes work perfectly for this recipe.
    • Cornstarch. One of the secrets to achieving crispy baked chicken wings. A light coating of cornstarch helps absorb surface moisture, creating a beautifully crisp exterior without deep frying.
    • Sea Salt. Enhances every layer of flavor while helping season the wings evenly.
    • Black Pepper. Adds mild heat and balances the sweetness of the glaze.
    • Smoked Paprika. Provides a subtle smoky flavor and beautiful golden color.
    • Garlic Powder. Adds savory depth that pairs perfectly with the citrus glaze.
    • Onion Powder. Creates another layer of rich, savory flavor.
    • Dried Parsley. Adds freshness and balances the spice blend.
    • Dried Thyme. Aromatic and earthy with subtle floral notes.
    • Dried Oregano. Adds warm Mediterranean flavor that complements the citrus beautifully.
    • Dried Basil. Provides a hint of sweetness and herbaceous flavor.
    • Red Pepper Flakes. Adds gentle heat throughout the seasoning blend and glaze. Adjust to your preferred spice level.
    • Cayenne Pepper (Optional). Perfect for anyone who loves extra spicy wings.
    • Butter. Creates a rich, silky base for the glaze.
    • Fresh Garlic. Adds bold savory flavor that balances the sweetness.
    • Fresh Orange Juice. The heart of the glaze. Freshly squeezed oranges provide bright citrus flavor that simply can’t be matched by bottled juice.
    • Orange Marmalade. Adds concentrated orange flavor and helps create the signature sticky glaze.
    • Honey. Naturally sweetens the sauce while helping it caramelize beautifully. Hot honey creates an even spicier version, while maple syrup makes a delicious refined sugar-free alternative.
    • Cornstarch Slurry. Thickens the glaze into a glossy coating that clings beautifully to every wing.
    • Orange Peel. Fresh orange peel adds fragrant citrus oils and enhances the fresh orange flavor. A little zest goes a long way.

Tips for the Crispiest Chicken Wings

    Pat the Wings Completely Dry

Moisture is the enemy of crispy skin. Use paper towels to thoroughly dry each wing before seasoning. The drier the wings, the crispier they’ll become.

    Don’t Skip the Cornstarch

Cornstarch creates a light coating that helps the skin crisp up beautifully in the oven. This simple ingredient makes all the difference.

    Bake on a Wire Rack

Elevating the wings allows hot air to circulate underneath, helping them cook evenly and crisp on all sides. If you don’t have a rack, flip the wings halfway through baking.

    Use High Heat

A hotter oven encourages caramelization and crispy skin without drying out the meat.

    Don’t Overcrowd the Pan

Leave a little space between each wing. Crowded wings steam instead of crisp.

    Flip Halfway Through

Turning the wings ensures even browning and maximum crispiness.

    Glaze at the End

Always toss the wings in the sticky orange glaze after they’ve finished baking. Adding the glaze too early can cause the sugars in the honey and marmalade to burn before the wings become crispy.

    Serve Immediately

Sticky glazed wings are best enjoyed fresh while the skin is still crisp and the glaze is warm and glossy.

Baked chicken wings on a griddle being held by woman hands.

    Ingredient Substitutions

One of the best things about this recipe is how easy it is to customize.

    Honey

    Instead of honey, use:

    • Hot honey
    • Maple syrup
    • Agave nectar

    Orange Marmalade

    You can substitute:

    • Apricot preserves
    • Peach preserves
    • Orange preserves
    • Mandarin marmalade

    Fresh Orange Juice

Fresh is always best, but bottled 100% orange juice works in a pinch.

What to Serve With Sticky Orange Chicken Wings

They’re just perfect with anything, and I know that I might be biased because of my absolute LOVE for chicken wings as a whole. Haha. Although these wings make for the perfect handheld appetizer, I also love making these wings during the week along with my favorites like—

    Best Dipping Sauces

Although these wings are incredibly flavorful on their own, they’re even better with a dipping sauce.

    Try serving them with:

    Spicy Orange Chicken Wings Q + A’s

Can I bake these chicken wings instead of frying them?

Yes! This recipe is specifically designed for baked chicken wings. Baking them at a high temperature with a light coating of cornstarch creates crispy skin without the need for deep frying.

Can I make these wings in the air fryer?

Absolutely! Air fry the seasoned wings at 400°F for 20–25 minutes, flipping halfway through, until they’re golden brown and crispy. Once cooked, toss them in the warm honey orange glaze just before serving.

Why do you use cornstarch on the wings?

Cornstarch is one of the best-kept secrets for crispy baked wings. It helps absorb excess moisture from the skin, creating a light, crispy coating while allowing the wings to stay juicy on the inside.

Can I use frozen chicken wings?

Yes! Just be sure to thaw them completely and pat them very dry with paper towels before seasoning.

Can I make the orange glaze ahead of time?

Yes! The honey orange glaze can be made up to 3 days in advance. Store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator and gently reheat it over low heat before tossing with the wings.

Can I use bottled orange juice instead of fresh oranges?

Freshly squeezed oranges provide the brightest, freshest flavor, but bottled 100% orange juice works well if you’re short on time.

What does orange marmalade do in the glaze?

Orange marmalade adds concentrated citrus flavor while helping create the thick, glossy texture that makes the wings wonderfully sticky.

Can I make these wings less spicy?

Of course! Simply reduce or omit the:
    Red pepper flakes
    Cayenne pepper

You’ll still have a sweet, citrusy honey orange glaze with plenty of flavor.

How can I make these wings even spicier?

    For more heat, try adding:
    Extra red pepper flakes
    More cayenne pepper
    Hot honey
    Finely minced Scotch bonnet peppers
    Habanero peppers
    Your favorite hot sauce

    Can I substitute the honey?

    Yes! You can use:
    Pure maple syrup
    Agave nectar
    Hot honey
Brown sugar (dissolved into the glaze)

Each option creates a slightly different flavor while maintaining that delicious sticky finish.

What should I serve with sticky orange chicken wings?

    These wings pair perfectly with:
    French fries
    Sweet potato fries
    Mac and cheese
    Coleslaw
    Cornbread
    Rice
    Roasted vegetables
    Garden salad
    Corn on the cob

    What’s the best dipping sauce?

These wings are delicious on their own, but they also pair well with:
    Ranch dressing
    Blue cheese dressing
    Garlic aioli
    Chipotle ranch
    Honey mustard

Can I prepare these wings ahead of time?

Yes! Season the wings and prepare the glaze up to 2 days ahead. Store them separately in the refrigerator, then bake the wings and toss them in the warmed glaze just before serving.

    How do I store leftovers?

Store leftover wings in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.

What’s the best way to reheat chicken wings?

For the crispiest results, reheat the wings in:
    A 375°F oven for 10–15 minutes
An air fryer for 5–8 minutes

Avoid microwaving if possible, as it softens the crispy skin.

    Can I freeze these wings?

Yes! Freeze the cooked wings in a freezer-safe container for up to 3 months.

For best results, freeze the wings before tossing them in the glaze, then prepare the glaze fresh when you’re ready to serve.

Can I use this glaze on other proteins?

Definitely! This sweet and spicy honey orange glaze is incredibly versatile and tastes amazing on:
    Chicken thighs
    Drumsticks
    Chicken breasts
    Salmon
    Shrimp
    Pork chops
    Meatballs
    Tofu
    Roasted cauliflower

It’s a great sauce to keep on hand for quick weeknight meals.

    Why aren’t my wings crispy?

If your wings didn’t crisp up, one of these factors may be the cause:
The wings weren’t patted dry before seasoning.
    The baking sheet was overcrowded.
The oven temperature was too low.
The glaze was added before the wings finished baking.

For the crispiest results, bake the wings until fully crisp first, then toss them in the warm glaze just before serving.

Can I double this recipe for a party?

Absolutely! This recipe doubles and even triples beautifully, making it ideal for game day, holiday gatherings, cookouts, potlucks, and family celebrations.

If doubling the recipe, bake the wings on two separate baking sheets to ensure they crisp up evenly.

    Prep Time: 10 minutes mins

    Cook Time: 35 minutes mins

    Total Time: 45 minutes mins

    Serves: 6 servings

    CHICKEN WINGS:

    • 2 ½ lbs. organic chicken wings, disjointed
    • 1 teaspoon sea salt
    • 1 teaspoon black pepper
    • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
    • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
    • 1 teaspoon onion powder
    • 1 teaspoon dried parsley
    • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
    • 1 teaspoon red pepper flakes
    • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
    • 1 teaspoon dried basil
    • ½ teaspoon cayenne pepper, optional
    • ¼ cup cornstarch

    STICKY ORANGE GLAZE:

    • 2 Tbsps unsalted butter
    • 2 garlic cloves, minced
    • 2 oranges, freshly-squeezed
    • 2 Tbsps orange marmalade
    • ½ cup organic raw honey (You can use hot honey or pure maple syrup instead; See notes!)
    • 1 teaspoon red pepper flakes, optional (Use or omit depending on level of spiciness desired)
    • 1 teaspoon cornstarch + 2 Tbsps warm water
    • peels of an orange

    MARINATE THE CHICKEN WINGS:

    • In a large bowl, add your freshly cleaned + rinsed chicken wings along with the seasonings: salt, black pepper, smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, parsley, thyme, red pepper flakes, oregano, basil, cayenne, and cornstarch, mixing everything together until chicken is fully coated. Let it sit for 10-15 minutes. NOTE: For best results, it’s best to marinate chicken overnight in the refrigerator or for up to 2 days.

    • Preheat the oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit and line a baking sheet with parchment paper or non-stick foil paper and a wire rack (if using) for the best crispy results. NOTE: be sure to generously spray the wire rack to ensure that wings don’t stick.

WHIP TOGETHER THE SAUCE + TOSS WINGS:

    • In a medium skillet (10-inch) over medium-high heat, add the butter and let it melt. Then add in the minced garlic and sauté for 1 minute. Add the honey, orange marmalade, orange juice, and red pepper flakes (if using), and whisk everything together until it begins to boil. Add the orange peels and stir to combine. Reduce heat to low and allow the sauce to simmer for 1-2 minutes until is had a “sticky” consistency. NOTE: If sauce isn’t thick enough, add the cornstarch + water mixture and stir until it thickens.

    • Once the wings have become crispy, remove from the oven and add them to the sauce, tossing until wings are fully coated.

    • Serve wings immediately with your favorite side (fries, garlic bread, mashed potatoes, mac + cheese, rice, etc.) or salad.
    • Bon Appetit!

    • STORAGE: Any leftovers can be kept in a tightly sealed container and refrigerated for up to 3-4 days. Reheat in the oven at 375 degrees Fahrenheit or microwave when ready to serve.
    • GLUTEN-FREE OPTION: To make these wings GF, just ensure that all sauce ingredients (like preserves/jam) are GF-friendly and the best alternative to cornstarch (if it’s not GF-friendly) is arrowroot starch or Gf flour.
    • TIPS FOR CRISPY WINGS: See the post for all tips for making the most crispiest chicken wings.
    • AIR FRYER + OTHER OPTIONS: See FAQ section!
    • SWEETENER: You can always substitute the honey with maple syrup, organic cane sugar, organic brown sugar, or Agave.
