Black Voices: News, Culture & Community from Across the Nation

After an all-night voting marathon, Senate Republicans pushed through President Donald Trump’s massive spending bill by a single vote — 51 to 50 — with Vice President JD Vance breaking the tie.

Three Republicans — Sens. Susan Collins, Rand Paul and Thom Tillis — broke with their party over deep concerns about the bill’s impact on Medicaid, debt and rural health care.

The bill extends Trump’s 2017 tax cuts, adds a no-tax-on-tips policy, and raises the federal debt ceiling by $5 trillion.

It also cuts back on key safety net programs and ramps up border and military spending.

Now the fight moves to the House, where Republicans are divided — some worry the bill goes too far, while others say it doesn’t go far enough. GOP leaders hope fear of going against Trump will keep members in line.

Democrats say the bill will hurt everyday Americans and plan to use it as a major campaign issue heading into next year’s elections.
