Toronto Newcomer Day Connects Communities
TORONTO, ON — Thousands of residents gathered at Nathan Phillips Square and Toronto City Hall on May 29 as the City of Toronto hosted its 12th annual Toronto Newcomer Day, celebrating the contributions of newcomers and the diverse communities that help shape Canada’s largest city.
The annual event brought together newcomers, community organizations, government agencies, and cultural groups for a day of information-sharing, entertainment, and celebration.
A Celebration of Toronto’s Diversity
Mayor Olivia Chow proclaimed May 29 as Newcomer Day and attended the event alongside Deputy Mayor Ausma Malik.
Toronto Newcomer Day has become one of the city’s signature multicultural events, recognizing the important role immigrants play in building Toronto’s economy, culture, and communities.
According to the City of Toronto, approximately 52 per cent of Toronto residents were born outside Canada, making Toronto one of the most diverse cities in the world.
For many members of the Caribbean diaspora and other newcomer communities, the event serves as both a welcome and a celebration of the journeys that have helped shape modern Toronto.
Connecting Newcomers with Essential Services
More than 125 exhibitors participated in this year’s event, providing information and support services for newcomers settling in Canada.
Available resources included:
- Employment counselling
- Settlement services
- Housing and shelter supports
- Health and mental health programs
- Legal services
- Arts and education programs
- Children and youth services
- Accessibility supports
Visitors also enjoyed a food fair, marketplace, and interactive activities throughout the day.
The event aims to help newcomers access the resources they need while creating opportunities to build community connections.
Citizenship Ceremony Welcomes New Canadians
One of the day’s most significant moments took place inside Toronto Council Chambers, where 50 individuals officially became Canadian citizens during a citizenship ceremony hosted by the Government of Canada.
Councillor Neethan Shan attended the ceremony on behalf of Toronto City Council and offered remarks welcoming the new citizens.
The ceremony highlighted the importance of immigration in shaping Toronto’s future and provided an opportunity to celebrate the newest members of Canada’s multicultural society.
Cultural Performances Showcase Global Traditions
The celebration featured a variety of performances representing Toronto’s diverse cultural communities.
This year’s entertainment lineup included:
- JUNO Award-winning artist Tom Wilson
- Indigenous youth drumming group Buffalo Charging Drummers
- Iranian contemporary musician Bahar Atish
- Massyr Ensemble, featuring music from across the Arab world
The performances reflected the many cultures that contribute to Toronto’s identity and demonstrated the city’s commitment to inclusion and cultural exchange.
A Growing Tradition
Toronto was among the first municipalities in Canada to establish an official Newcomer Day in 2015.
Since its launch, more than 75,000 people have participated in the annual celebration. Attendance has grown significantly over the years, increasing from approximately 2,000 participants at the inaugural event to more than 10,000 attendees annually since 2022.
The continued growth of the event reflects Toronto’s ongoing role as a destination for immigrants from around the world, including large communities from the Caribbean, Africa, Asia, Latin America, and Europe.

Toronto Newcomer Day was presented in partnership with President’s Choice and supported by Rogers Communications, Metrolinx, Tim Hortons, IKEA Canada, New Canadians TV, and Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada.
As thousands gathered to celebrate community, culture, and opportunity, the event reinforced Toronto’s reputation as a city where newcomers are welcomed and encouraged to thrive.
