    Key takeaways
    • Project ROAR (Rising Over All Roadblocks) supports students overcoming academic and personal challenges, rebuilding confidence, advancing toward graduation.
    • Launched Spring 2025 with 127 students; served over 275 in Spring 2026 and is open to all Texas Southern University students.
    • Primarily focuses on students on academic probation or returning from mandatory academic separation; faculty and staff refer additional students.
    • The $17,000 donation, led by Dr. Rodney Welch and Samajh Robinson, will help continue Project ROAR's student support services.

Texas Southern University’s signature academic support initiative, Project ROAR, has received a significant investment from Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc.

Project ROAR – Rising Over All Roadblocks – supports students in overcoming academic and personal challenges, rebuilding confidence in their academic abilities, and making meaningful progress toward graduation.

The program launched in Spring 2025 with an initial cohort of 127 students. It served more than 275 students during the Spring 2026 semester. It is open to all Texas Southern students. However, the program primarily focuses on students who are on academic probation or returning from a mandatory academic separation, including academic suspension. Students are also referred to the program by faculty and staff across campus for additional support.

“This generous investment will allow Project ROAR to continue meeting students where they are and providing the support, resources, and encouragement they need to overcome roadblocks and move closer to graduation,” said Dewayne Stafford, J.D., Texas Southern University Student Ombudsman.

The program has consistently seen around 70% of students in the program improve their academic standing and GPA, helping student progression, retention, and graduation!

The $17,000 donation was spearheaded by Dr. Rodney Welch, Southwestern Regional Vice President of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., and Mr. Samajh Robinson, Assistant Vice President.
