Glow & Grow: Black Beauty, Haircare, and Skincare Tips

    Key takeaways
    • As Miko Branch advises, learn your hair's personality: note changes when wet, dry, or styled to tailor care.
    • Understand how your hair responds to specific styling and products so you give it what it needs and stop when it's had enough.
    • Treat curl care as an relationship: build routines, experiment gently, and honor limits for healthier, happier textured hair.

When it comes to natural hair, your curlfriends are your tribe. They understand wash-day rituals, dish on Threads about products that actually work and don’t judge you for stacking your bathroom cabinets with the latest curl concoctions. But before we build community around our hair, how many of us have taken the time to become besties with the strands growing from our own heads?

Miss Jessie’s co-founder Miko Branch describes textured hair as having its own “personality.” She would know. It was a practical observation about how curls change when they are wet, dry or styled, but it also felt like an invitation. After all, how many of us have names for our favorite wigs or hairstyles? If our hair has a personality, then, of course, caring for it begins with getting to know it.

We chatted it up with Branch whose curl expertise runs deep. The salon stylist-turned-beauty entrepreneur has been serving curl inspo since 2000 with the haircare brand she designed specifically for textured hair with her late sister Titi.

While perfect coils are an admirable goal, for Branch, that relationship begins with simply understanding how your hair responds to specific styling, what it needs and when it has had enough of you and your products.

Swipe through for five ways tips to become curlfriends with your own hair.
