SAVANNAH –The City of Savannah, in partnership with St. Joseph’s/Candler’s Paint the Town Pink Fundraiser, will illuminate City Hall in pink beginning at 6:45 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 23 through Oct. 27 in observance of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month (BCAM) was co-created by the American Cancer Society in 1985 as a week-long campaign to bring widespread attention to the disease and to educate women about early detection. This year marks the 40th anniversary of BCAM.

According to the National Breast Cancer Foundation, 1-in-8 women in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. This year, an estimated 316,000 women and 2,800 men will be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer. According to the Georgia Department of Public Health (DPH), cancer is the second leading cause of death in the state.

St. Joseph’s/Candler’s Paint the Town Pink is an annual fundraiser held for the Telfair Mammography Fund. The fund was created with assistance from the Zonta Club in 2005 to help provide no-cost breast health services to uninsured and underinsured individuals. Those services include screening and diagnostic mammograms, breast ultrasounds, MRI and more.

Residents and visitors are invited to take selfies with City Hall, post using the hashtags #BreastCancerAwareness and #Pinktober, and tag the City’s official social media channels.
