    By Shelby Stewart

When Dr. Donald Comer officially becomes Lane College’s 11th president next month, he’ll be bringing more than three decades worth of executive leadership at FedEx to one of the nation’s oldest Historically Black Colleges and Universities. During his 35-year career at the global logistics company, Comer rose to become vice president of Decision Science & Analytics and Operations Analysis, overseeing strategy, finance, data analytics and operational planning before retiring in 2025.

His appointment comes at a pivotal moment for Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) many of which are balancing enrollment growth, fundraising goals, infrastructure investments and evolving workforce demands while continuing to serve as critical engines of Black economic mobility.

Lane College announced that Comer, who previously served as interim president, will be formally installed on August 21 after the Board of Trustees chose to appoint him permanently rather than conduct a national presidential search. The board cited his steady leadership, institutional stability and commitment to the college’s mission.

A Jackson, Tennessee, native, Comer returned home after a 35-year corporate career, bringing executive experience along with years of service on the boards of fellow HBCUs LeMoyne-Owen College and Stillman College.

While university presidencies have traditionally been filled by career academics, institutions are increasingly looking toward executives with experience managing large organizations, cultivating donor relationships and leading through economic uncertainty, as HBCUs have increasingly become underfunded in the current presidential administration.

For HBCUs in particular, those skills can prove especially valuable as schools compete for philanthropic investment, corporate partnerships and research opportunities while preparing graduates for an increasingly competitive workforce.

“Stewardship is not simply about leading people through a moment; it is about building a culture that outlives the moment,” Comer said in a statement. “We are making decisions that honor our history, respond to this moment and position the College for a future defined by excellence, innovation and enduring impact.”

The presidential investiture will headline a multi-day celebration featuring community service initiatives, a leadership speaker series, scholarship fundraising events and alumni programming.

The announcement also coincides with another institutional milestone: Lane College has earned designation as an All-Steinway School, placing it among a select group of colleges worldwide recognized for their commitment to music education.

Founded in 1882 by the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church, Lane College has spent more than 140 years preparing Black students for careers rooted in leadership and service.

As colleges nationwide rethink how they prepare students for an increasingly competitive workforce, HBCUs continue to punch above their weight in producing Black professionals, entrepreneurs and business leaders. Comer’s appointment signals that the next era of HBCU leadership may increasingly draw from executives who have navigated corporate boardrooms, built strategic partnerships and understand what today’s employers demand—bringing those lessons back to the institutions that have long served as engines of Black opportunity.
