Savannah State Update:

Key takeaways
  • Mya Lomax ranked in the top 4 percent of Army ROTC cadets nationwide.
  • Senior at Savannah State University majoring in business marketing with a minor in military science.
  • Maintains a 4.0 GPA and will commission as a Second Lieutenant in May 2026.
  • Active in campus organizations including Delta Sigma Theta and Delta Sigma Pi, graduating debt-free via scholarships.
  • Credits mentorship from Capt. Jon Day and Christopher McCall for leadership development and program impact.

Mya Lomax, an Army ROTC Cadet at Savannah State University (SSU), has been ranked as one of the top 4 percent Army Cadets in the nation from a pool of more than 5,580 cadets. A senior majoring in business marketing and a minor in military science, Lomax grew up in a military family in Kissimmee, Fla and is on track to graduate with a 4.0 GPA and commission into the U.S. Army as a Second Lieutenant in May 2026.

“My dad is retired from the Navy, he did 20 years. My older sister is currently in the reserves in the Army, and I’m following in their footsteps,†said Lomax.

She started at SSU in fall 2022, knowing that she wanted to major in business marketing and join the Army ROTC program.

“What attracted me to SSU was the atmosphere and the opportunities the university could offer me,†she said. “From the moment I toured the school, I felt the warm welcome of a home away from home.â€

Through her four years, Lomax has remained steadfast in the journey to achieve her goals.

“I have been able to maintain a 4.0 GPA, take advantage of several scholarships allowing me to graduate next semester debt-free, join numerous organizations such as Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc., and Delta Sigma Pi Business Fraternity,†she said.

She notes that she’s had much-needed help along the way.

“I have had multiple faculty and staff members become mentors to me and truly help to guide me in the right directions and encourage me to accomplish all of my goals,†she said.

She’s especially thankful for the mentorship and support offered by U.S Army Capt. Jon Day, assistant professor of military science, and Christopher McCall, director of Human Resources for Army ROTC.

Having been recognized as one of the top 4 percent cadets in the nation is a sweet validation for Lomax.

“I am super grateful to be recognized as one of the top 4% of Army Cadets in the nation,†she said. “It means so much to know that my hard work never went unnoticed.â€

McCall added, “From the day Cadet Mia Lomax set foot on the SSU Campus, she has led from the front. She came in as an honors student and a top Army ROTC recruit. Her influence and leadership have been tremendous to the program and the direction it has taken over the past 3 years. Her selection as a top 4% Cadet in the nation has boosted the credibility of the SSU Army ROTC program. I am extremely proud to have her as a student and a Cadet.â€
