    Savannah State Update:

    Key takeaways
    • Savannah State University’s Mechanical Engineering Technology program has received ABET accreditation, ensuring quality in education.
    • The Civil Engineering Technology and Electronics Engineering Technology programs also attained re-accreditation from ABET.
    • Accreditation guarantees that graduates are prepared for critical technical fields, enhancing their employability and skills.
    • The university launched the College of Engineering Technology and Computing, marking a first for HBCUs in Georgia.
    • ABET's peer-review process involves industry experts, enhancing program quality in technical disciplines.

Savannah State University’s (SSU) bachelor’s degree program in Mechanical Engineering Technology in the College of Engineering Technology and Computing has been accredited by the Engineering Technology Accreditation Commission of ABET, a nonprofit, ISO 9001-certified quality assurance organization. Through the accreditation of academic programs, recognition of credentials and assessment of student learning, ABET supports excellence in education worldwide.

In addition to the recent accreditation for the Mechanical Engineering Technology Program, SSU’s Civil Engineering Technology Program and the Electronics Engineering Technology Program received re-accreditation from ABET.

“We are very proud of our faculty, students, staff, industrial advisory boards, and administrators who have contributed to the success of the Mechanical Engineering Technology program,” said Dr. Mir Hayder, professor and program coordinator. “We are thrilled that it is now fully accredited, and we thank ABET for recognizing the value that our program adds to SSU’s College of Engineering Technology and Computing.”

ABET accreditation assures that programs meet standards to produce graduates ready to enter critical technical fields that are leading the way in innovation and emerging technologies, and anticipating the welfare and safety needs of the public.

“Securing accreditation from ABET speaks to the high quality of Savannah State University’s Engineering Technology Programs,” said Dr. Mohamad Mustafa, dean of the College of Engineering Technology and Computing. “Having all three Engineering Technology Programs accredited allows the university to continue to expand these programs to increase educational, internship, Co-op, and research opportunities for our students while supporting enrollment growth.”

Savannah State University has offered ABET-accredited engineering technology programs since October 1, 1973, making it the first and oldest program amongst HBCUs in Georgia. This year, the university launched the College of Engineering Technology and Computing, the first academic college for engineering technology at any HBCU in Georgia.

Sought worldwide, ABET’s voluntary peer-review process is highly respected because it adds critical value to academic programs in the technical disciplines, where quality, precision and safety are of the utmost importance.

Developed by technical professionals from ABET’s member societies, ABET criteria focus on what students experience and learn. ABET accreditation reviews look at program curricula, faculty, facilities and institutional support and are conducted by teams of highly skilled professionals from industry, academia and government, with expertise in the ABET disciplines.

ABET currently accredits 4,773 programs at 930 colleges and universities in 41 countries and areas as of Oct. 1, 2024.

More information about ABET, its member societies and the accreditation criteria used to evaluate programs can be found at www.abet.org.
