Politics Today: News, Analysis & Debate Across the Spectrum

Thursday, October 9, 2025

Good morning, and welcome to RedState’s “Morning Minute” — a brief glimpse at which stories are trending at the moment and a look ahead at what the day may bring. Consider this your one-stop shop for news to kickstart your day.

TOP O’ THE MORNIN’

Red-Hot at RedState

Sorry, Newsom: Palisades Fire Arrest Isn’t Closure; It’s Just the Beginning of a Terrible Reckoning

Regardless of exactly how the fire started, and the failures of the LAFD in ensuring the fire was extinguished, nearly 50 years of vegetation growth that built up in Topanga State Park without any brush clearance, let alone a controlled burn, contributed greatly to the blaze’s intensity, rapid spread, and lethality – and that’s on Newsom and the environmentalist wackos he catered to.

Who would want a boss or a governor who behaves like this and treats people this way? And if she acts like this in the public eye, how bad must she be in private?

Whiplash: CA County Imposes COVID Mask Mandate Just Days After Newsom Signed ‘No Masks for ICE’ Law

The anti-science, chaotic, ridiculous response to the virus over the years has exemplified everything that is wrong with leadership in the state, and frankly, progressive leadership nationwide regarding COVID.

North Texas ATF Concerned Over ‘Swift Links’

This isn’t proof of anything except that the NFA should be repealed so that we, the regular armed citizens of the United States, can meet the threats we’re likely to face on something approaching even ground.

Strange We Haven’t Heard About These Offshore Wind Farm Accidents Before

Now, I know I have an active imagination, but the same offshore farm in a busy shipping lane has had nearly three strikes in less than three years?

Hey, Pritzker — Do You Support THIS?

When the radicals target law enforcement and the politicians shield them, that’s not democracy — that’s sedition.

The Libs Are Totally Stunned Over What Could Be Trump’s Signature Foreign Policy Achievement

‘We’re opposed to peace’ is the next Democrat war cry in 2025.

Mamdani Admits He Didn’t Protect Women From Being Raped in Egypt … and the Reason Is Infuriating

So, yes, technically, he didn’t actually admit he watched a rape in progress and do nothing because of this dumb ideological reason. Rather he did nothing when he believed rapes were virtually certain to happen … because of that same, dumb ideological reason. We suppose that isn’t quite as bad. *eye roll*

WHAT’S ON TAP?

Today on Capitol Hill…

The House is still off, the Schumer Shutdown is still on. The Senate has a handful of meetings/hearings set:

  • Senate Armed Services — Hearings to examine the nomination of General Kenneth S. Wilsbach, USAF, for reappointment to the grade of general and to be Chief of Staff of the Air Force
  • Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions — Business meeting to consider the nominations of Crystal Carey, of New Jersey, to be General Counsel, and James Murphy, of Maryland, to be a Member, both of the National Labor Relations Board, and Rosario Palmieri, of Virginia, to be an Assistant Secretary, and Anthony D’Esposito, of New York, to be Inspector General, both of the Department of Labor
  • Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions — Hearings to examine AI’s potential to support patients, workers, children, and families
  • Senate Judiciary — Business meeting to consider the nominations of Rebecca L. Taibleson, of Wisconsin, to be United States Circuit Judge for the Seventh Circuit, David A. Bragdon and Lindsey Ann Freeman, both to be a United States District Judge for the Middle District of North Carolina, Robert P. Chamberlin and James D. Maxwell II, both to be a United States District Judge for the Northern District of Mississippi, Matthew E. Orso and Susan Courtwright Rodriguez, both to be a United States District Judge for the Western District of North Carolina, Sara Bailey, of Texas, to be Director of National Drug Control Policy, Braden Boucek, to be United States Attorney for the Middle District of Tennessee for the term of four years, Dominick Gerace II, to be United States Attorney for the Southern District of Ohio for the term of four years, Jerome Francis Gorgon, Jr., to be United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Michigan for the term of four years, James Kruger, to be United States Attorney for the Southern District of Mississippi for the term of four years, Scott Leary, to be United States Attorney for the Northern District of Mississippi for the term of four years, Bryan Stirling, to be United States Attorney for the District of South Carolina for the term of four years, Thomas Wheeler II, to be United States Attorney for the Southern District of Indiana for the term of four years, Thomas Albus, to be United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Missouri for the term of four years, and Adam Mildred, of Indiana, to be United States Attorney for the Northern District of Indiana for the term of four years

(Sorry for that wall of text there on the last one, but I thought readers might be glad to see more judges and U.S. attorneys making their way through the process.)

Even with the House out, there were some spicy moments on the Hill on Wednesday:

White House What’s Up

After having quite the busy Wednesday (Antifa roundtable, Gaza peace deal announcement), President Trump has a full Thursday on tap, as well, including a late morning Cabinet meeting followed by a meet and greet with Finnish President Alexander Stubb.

Vice President JD Vance shared photos from his and Second Lady Usha’s visit with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.

Usha and I truly enjoyed having Prime Minister of Canada @MarkJCarney over for dinner at the Vice President’s Residence last night.

And we ALL enjoyed the “Miramisu” that was served for dessert, handcrafted by the world’s youngest pastry chef, Mirabel Vance! 🇺🇸🇨🇦 pic.twitter.com/54SROdcYqB

Keeping Up With the Cabinet

Dir. Federal Bureau of Investigations – Kash Patel — At Wednesday’s roundtable, Patel confirmed that the FBI, with the assistance of the Treasury Department, is working to follow the money on Antifa funding.

🚨 BREAKING: FBI Director Kash Patel confirms he is ACTIVELY “following the money” with Treasury Secretary SCOTT BESSENT behind Antifa and left-wing militant groups

Full Court Press…

No oral argument before the Supreme Court today, but they’ve made it through the first six.

We did have several decisions of note from lower courts on Wednesday:

  • ✅ Rise Economy v. Vought (dismantling of CFPB) — Judge Dabney Friedrich (D.C.) DENIES plaintiffs’ partial motion for summary judgment (without prejudice).
  • ✅ State of Oregon v. Trump (National Guard deployment) — 9th Circuit GRANTS admin’s motion for administrative (temporary) stay of 1st TRO – this leaves the Oregon NG federalized (pursuant to Hegseth 9/28 memo) but NOT deployed. The court hears oral argument today (Thursday) on the motion for stay pending appeal.

Also, former FBI Director James Comey appeared for his arraignment on Wednesday and pleaded not guilty. His trial has been set for January 5, 2026.

COMING ATTRACTIONS

On Friday, per the White House, President Trump “will visit Walter Reed Medical Center for a planned meeting and remarks with the troops. While there, President Trump will stop by for his routine yearly check up.”

It also sounds likely he’ll be heading to the Middle East this weekend, with plans to address the Israeli Knesset on Sunday. Per Wednesday’s announcement regarding the peace deal, the hostages are set to be returned on Monday.

On Friday, First Lady Melania Trump will be making an announcement in the White House Grand Foyer.

MORNING MUSING

The news that a deal regarding a Gaza peace plan had been reached — that both Israel and Hamas were signing off on it — was welcome cause for celebration. But like most people, I’m hesitant to trust that it will actually come to fruition. We’ve seen Hamas go back on their word too many times to count.

I realize that the release of the hostages (both the living and the dead) is only part of Phase 1 of the agreement, but for me, that is the most critical focus at the moment. It is a relief to know that part of the agreement requires their return without any public ceremonies. From what we know, there remain 20 living hostages, and then 28 deceased. All of them need to be returned. I’m waiting to exhale until then.
