Glow & Grow: Black Beauty, Haircare, and Skincare Tips

    Key takeaways
    • Skin changes with age are normal for melanin-rich skin; it’s a transition, not a failure.
    • Simplify routines after 40: gentle cleansing, fewer active treatments, and focus on moisture retention.
    • Listen to your skin: dryness, sensitivity, and uneven tone are communication, not signs of flaw.
    • Prioritize consistency, protection, and patience over aggressive correction; skincare becomes maintenance and self-care.

Your skin is changing!  There comes a moment — often quietly — when the skin you’ve known your whole adult life begins to behave differently.

-Products that once worked beautifully now feel insufficient.
    -Glow becomes harder to maintain.
    -Dryness lingers longer.
    -Dark spots seem more stubborn.

Are you experiencing some of these changes?  I know I am.  For women with melanin-rich skin, this shift can feel confusing — even unsettling — because we’re often told our skin “ages better” and that we don’t need to worry until much later.

While it’s true that melanin offers natural protection, it does not make us immune to change. It simply means our skin changes differently.

If you’re in your late 30s, 40s, or beyond — or approaching that season — this is not a breakdown. It’s a transition.

And your skin deserves care that reflects that.

Why Melanin-Rich Skin Changes With Time

Melanin-rich skin is beautifully complex. It has stronger natural UV protection, thicker dermal layers, and often better elasticity in earlier years. But as we mature, several shifts begin to occur, many of them internal.

Hormonal changes play a significant role. Estrogen supports hydration, collagen production, and skin thickness. As levels fluctuate — sometimes years before menopause — your skin can begin to feel:

    -Drier

    -Thinner

    -Less resilient

    -More reactive

Cell turnover also slows with age. This means dead skin cells linger longer on the surface, contributing to dullness and uneven tone. For melanin-rich skin, slower turnover can also make hyperpigmentation appear more persistent, even when it’s not worsening.

Add in years of environmental exposure, stress, disrupted sleep, and life responsibilities, and your skin begins to ask for something different.

    Not more.
    Different.

The Myth of “Nothing’s Wrong With My Skin”

Many women delay adjusting their skincare because they believe they shouldn’t need to. We’ve been taught that melanin-rich skin doesn’t wrinkle, doesn’t age, doesn’t struggle.  And we’ve certainly been told that “Black Don’t Crack”.

But your skin doesn’t suddenly become “problematic.” It becomes communicative.

    -Dryness is communication.
    -Sensitivity is communication.
    -Uneven tone is communication.

Your skin is not failing you, it’s talking to you. It’s telling you that the strategies of your 20s and early 30s no longer apply. That’s perfectly normal.

Mature skin doesn’t respond well to aggression. It responds to consistency, protection, and nourishment.

Why Less Becomes More After 40

One of the most important shifts for maturing skin — especially melanin-rich skin — is simplifying.

Over-cleansing, over-exfoliating, and over-layering products can quietly damage the skin barrier. What is the skin barrier?

Simply put … The skin barrier is your skin’s natural protective layer that keeps moisture in and irritants out.
When the barrier is compromised, moisture escapes more easily, inflammation increases, and pigmentation becomes harder to manage.

This is why many of you notice that despite “doing everything,” your skin feels perpetually dry or irritated.

    Mature skin benefits from:

–Gentle cleansing that cleans your skin without stripping it of moisture

-Keeping your routine simple and consistent

-Products that help your skin hold onto moisture

-Time to respond without being overwhelmed

A thoughtful routine doesn’t chase correction. It supports stability.

The Emotional Side of Skin Changes

Skin changes don’t happen in isolation. They often coincide with major life shifts — caregiving, career changes, loss, stress, or simply carrying more responsibility than before.

When your skin changes during these times, it can feel personal.

But caring for your skin at this stage of life is not about reclaiming youth. It’s about supporting yourself where you are now.

Skincare becomes less about transformation and more about maintenance, comfort, and respect.

    That’s not giving up.
    That’s wisdom.

What This Season of Care Requires

    Maturing melanin-rich skin needs:

-Moisture that lasts, not just momentary softness

-Protection from inflammation and environmental stress

    -Consistency over correction

    -Patience over punishment

It also needs education, not trends, not fear-based marketing, not pressure to buy more than necessary.

This is the time and season in your life where your skin thrives on intention.

    Moving Forward With Confidence

If your skin feels unfamiliar lately, take comfort in knowing, you are not behind, and you are not alone.

You are simply entering a new phase —one that calls for clarity, simplicity, and care that reflects your lived experience.

From here on, skincare is no longer about chasing what worked before.
It’s about supporting what your skin is becoming.

And that is a beautiful place to begin again.

That’s it for this week.  As always ….

    Dedicated to Your Beauty,

    Juliette Samuel,

    Esthetician/Author/Publisher,

    Nyraju Skin Care
