Black Voices: Money and Employment News from Across the Nation

    Key takeaways
    • Extended freestyle confronted figures including Dame Dash, Ye, Drake, Nicki Minaj, Jaguar Wright, and Sonstar Peterson.
    • Jay-Z dug into his catalog with classics like U Don’t Know, Run This Town, Dirt Off Your Shoulder, and Never Change.
    • Jazmine Sullivan joined for a stirring Feelin’ It, then delivered a solo Need U Bad that sparked the night’s biggest singalong.
    • Full Roc-A-Fella reunion included Memphis Bleek, Beanie Sigel, Freeway, Peedi Crakk, and Young Gunz.
    • Meek Mill praised Jay-Z; festival also featured Brandy, Kehlani, De La Soul, Black Thought, and closing by Erykah Badu.

Jay-Z returned to the stage in a big way at this year’s Roots Picnic. Heading up to the weekend, anticipation hovered over Philadelphia’s Belmont Plateau as fans speculated about what the rap icon might have planned for his first major performance in years. By the time he finally emerged, sporting a noticeably different look and walking with the confidence that has defined his career for decades.

He opened with 2002’s “Hovi Baby” before quickly turning attention to a new freestyle that immediately dominated conversation online. During the extended verse, Jay-Z addressed several figures who have been at the center of headlines and social media speculation in recent years, including Dame Dash, Ye, Drake, Nicki Minaj, Jaguar Wright, and Tory Lanez’s father, Sonstar Peterson. Among the most discussed lines were, “The jig is up, n****, I’m up 10, wrong chart champ, n****s looked up to Hov, I never looked up to them,” “Another one fumbled his, wonder how I get the blame, ns teeth is tumbling out they mouth and somehow I’m the one who did it,” and “That lady back on that stuff, she like she in love with ’em.” The performance gave fans plenty to dissect long after the set ended.

As the set progressed, Jay-Z pulled from nearly every chapter of his catalog, performing favorites including “U Don’t Know,” “F*ckWithMeYouKnowIGotIt,” “N**** What, N**** Who,” “Run This Town,” “Jigga My N****,” “Where I’m From,” “Marcy Me,” “Dirt Off Your Shoulder,” “I Know,” and “Never Change.” One of the evening’s standout moments arrived when Jazmine Sullivan joined him for a stirring rendition of “Feelin’ It.” The Philadelphia native then briefly took the spotlight herself, delivering a powerful performance of “Need U Bad” that drew one of the biggest singalongs of the night.

As the show entered its second half, the stage gradually evolved into a full-fledged Roc-A-Fella reunion. Memphis Bleek was the first to appear, followed by a parade of longtime collaborators and former labelmates. Beanie Sigel received a thunderous hometown welcome before Freeway joined him, bringing additional energy to the crowd. Peedi Crakk soon followed, while Young Gunz kept the momentum rolling. Songs including “Roc the Mic,” “Flipside,” “Can’t Stop, Won’t Stop,” and “What We Do” transformed Belmont Plateau into a massive celebration of Philadelphia rap, with thousands of fans reciting every lyric from memory.

Near the end of the night, Meek Mill arrived to perform his iconic “Dreams & Nightmares” intro while repeatedly praising Jay-Z as one of the greatest rappers ever to pick up a microphone. Other moments revealed how much the performance meant to Jay-Z himself. During “Public Service Announcement,” he repeatedly expressed how much he missed being onstage. Later, when audience members called for Beyoncé to make an appearance, he jokingly pushed back, reminding everyone that he had already given them plenty.

Roots Picnic, however, has always been bigger than any single performance. Across the two-day festival, several artists delivered standout sets of their own. Brandy reminded audiences why she remains one of R&B’s most respected vocalists, Kehlani continued her recent hot streak with a performance built around material from her latest album, and Jermaine Dupri, Mariah the Scientist, and T.I. turned Sunday afternoon into a hit parade.

Elsewhere, De La Soul brought classic Hip-Hop energy to the festival grounds, joined by Talib Kweli for a handful of beloved records. Black Thought and J. Period’s Live Mixtape once again delivered surprise appearances and lyrical showcases. By Sunday evening, Erykah Badu closed the festival with the type of performance only she can deliver.
