Cooling Facilities Openings Extend Through Saturday Amid Extreme Heat
SAVANNAH – The City of Savannah is opening cooling facilities due to extreme heat expected Friday, July 10, and Saturday, July 11, 2026.
What’s Happening:
- Heat advisory in effect 11:00am – 7:00pm, Friday, July 10, 2026 (Similar conditions expected Saturday, though official advisory has not been issued as of time of this release)
- Heat index values up to 110 degrees expected
- Coastal Bryan, Coastal Liberty, Coastal McIntosh, Chatham Counties
- Elevated temperatures and high humidity may cause heat-related illnesses.
What to Do:
To reduce risk during outdoor work/activities, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned environments. Hydrate before, during, and after work. Drink 1 cup of cool water every 20 minutes – even if not thirsty. Avoid energy drinks and alcohol. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency. Call 911!
- Additional precautionary/preparedness actions:
- Drink plenty of fluids, refrain from direct exposure to the sun, and tend to relatives and neighbors. Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances. Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. Wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing. When possible, reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke and when to call 911.
