City of Savannah Opening Cooling Facilities Amid Extreme Heat

SAVANNAH – The City of Savannah is opening cooling facilities due to extreme heat forecasted for Sunday, July 5, 2026, through early next week.

    What’s Happening:

    • Heat index values of 105 to 110 expected.
    • Coastal southeast Georgia and coastal South Carolina are impacted areas.
    • Extreme heat and high humidity may cause heat-related illnesses.

    What to Do:

To reduce risk during outdoor work/activities, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency. Call 911.

Drink plenty of fluids, refrain from direct exposure to the sun, and tend to relatives and neighbors. Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances. Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. Wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing. When possible, reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke and when to call 911.

    Where to Go:

Cooling Centers: The following are open 11:00am – 6:00pm

    • Tompkins Center – 2333 Ogeechee Road

    Splash Pads: Open 9:00am – 8:00pm

    • Ben Van Clark Park – 1202 E. Park Avenue
    • Hudson Hill Community Center – 202 W. Lathrop Avenue
