The event marked a significant milestone not only for the graduates and their families but also for the broader SSU community, which has proudly upheld a legacy of excellence in higher education since 1890. Former Interim President Cynthia Robinson Alexander, J.D., delivered the keynote address, inspiring graduates with a powerful message about the importance keeping a strong circle of people around you, keeping your passion ignited and being open to the possibilities ahead.

The ceremony was also a historic moment for SSU’s new president, Dr. Jermaine Whirl, who presided over his first commencement since taking office on April 1 as the institution’s 15th president.

“It’s an incredible honor to celebrate this milestone with our graduates,” said Dr. Whirl. “Savannah State University has a 135-year legacy of empowering students through education and opportunity. Today’s ceremony is more than a celebration—it’s a testament to the resilience and brilliance of our students and the enduring impact of HBCUs. Our graduates are prepared to lead, serve, and innovate in a world that needs their voices and talents more than ever.”

Among the highlights of the ceremony was the presentation of the President’s Second Mile Award, the university’s highest honor for graduating seniors. The Spring 2025 recipient was Ric’Kayla Short, a business management major from Macon, Mississippi. Recognized for her leadership and service on campus and in the community, Short has accepted a full-time position as a finance analyst at Wells Fargo.

The university also recognized newly commissioned officers from SSU’s Army and Navy ROTC programs: Cadets Geovanni Ayala Flores and Marae Woodson (U.S. Army), and Hannah Holliman (U.S. Navy), honoring their commitment to serve the nation. This graduating class joins Savannah State’s alumni network of more than 35,000 strong, representing leaders and changemakers across the globe.
