Savannah State Volleyball – Savannah State Athletics
The Savannah State University Volleyball team will play its annual ‘Orange and Blue Scrimmage’ on Tuesday, September 2, at 6 p.m. in Tiger Arena. Following this scrimmage, they will host Middle Georgia State University on Thursday, September 4, at 6 p.m. after a deep postseason run last year that saw them lose to eventual champions Spring Hill in the semi-finals. This year, the Tigers brought in 8 new faces, 7 of them being freshmen.
“Talent is there, although we are still young, that may be our only downfall. It is my job to bring them together and produce success on the court,” said Head Coach Roselidah Obunaga.

After a strong postseason last year, where they reached the semi-finals, the team has welcomed eight new players, primarily freshmen. Head Coach Roselidah Obunaga acknowledges the team’s youth as a potential challenge but is focused on building cohesion for success.
Key returning players include senior outside hitter Savannah Everett and sophomore setter Amiyah Walker, both recognized as Pre-Season SIAC Conference First Team members. The new freshmen bring a vibrant energy to the team, crucial for their goal of returning to the conference championship and winning it this time. With a mix of experienced players and eager newcomers, the season promises excitement for fans and players alike.
Despite the addition of so many new faces, the Tigers still return key players like senior outside hitter Savannah Everett and sophomore Setter, Amiyah Walker. Both of whom were named Pre-Season SIAC Conference First Team members. Other instrumental players, such as senior middle blocker Aaliyah Saunders and libero Saniaa Dickey, provide experience that the underclassmen can lean on throughout the season.
“The incoming players have been very open to learning, and it’s easier on the leaders helping them adjust to understanding the system we play,” said senior Savannah Everett.
The incoming freshmen will be instrumental in the fight to make it back to the conference championship with the goal to win it all this time around. Last year’s Volleyball team lost members such as 2024 SIAC Libero of the year, Kloe Ludy, and Second Team All-conference outside hitter, Jasmine Nettles. Regardless of the shoes the underclassmen have to fill, they have brought an unmatched energy with them to practices.
“This group of girls has big-time energy. They have that grit and love for the game, and so it just makes it exciting to see how the season will play out,” said sophomore Amiyah Walker.
That energy could be the final piece that the Tigers need in order to achieve their goals of winning it all when November rolls around. One thing is clear: this season promises excitement for both fans and players as we watch this team’s story unfold.
