Aug. 12 – Live Oak Public Library Celebrates 112th Birthday of the Carnegie Library | Non-Profit Organizations

• 2 p.m.: Screening of excerpts from, “Are You a Librarian?” a document by African American librarian Rodney Freeman, featuring LOPL staff interviews
• 3 p.m.: Organized tour of the Carnegie Library Heritage Center
• 4 p.m.: Vocal performance & drum/shakers with songwriter and artist, Temakha

The Carnegie Library Heritage Center exists to preserve and celebrate the powerful legacy of Savannah’s historic Carnegie Library. Through museum-quality exhibits, oral history recordings and interactive displays, it honors the library’s role as a beacon of knowledge and community empowerment for Black Savannahians during segregation and beyond. The mission of CLHC is to uplift their stories, connect generations and ensure that our shared history continues to inspire the future.

It reopened as a special collections library after renovation and repairs required after damage sustained during Tropical Story Debby forced its closure in August 2024. 

CLHC is free and open to the public Monday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. CLHC is located at 537 E. Henry Street, Savannah.
