City of Savannah Opening Cooling Facilities Sunday Amid Extreme Heat

SAVANNAH – The City of Savannah is opening cooling facilities due to heat advisory issued for Sunday, July 12, 2026

    What’s Happening:

    • Heat advisory in effect 11:00am – 7:00pm, Sunday, July 12, 2026
    • Heat index values up to 112 degrees expected
    • Coastal Bryan, Coastal Chatham, Coastal Liberty, Coastal McIntosh, Inland Chatham Counties are impacted areas
    • Elevated temperatures and high humidity may cause heat-related illnesses.

    What to Do:

To reduce risk during outdoor work/activities, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned environments. Hydrate before, during, and after work. Drink 1 cup of cool water every 20 minutes – even if not thirsty. Avoid energy drinks and alcohol. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency. Call 911!

    • Additional precautionary/preparedness actions:
    • Drink plenty of fluids, refrain from direct exposure to the sun, and tend to relatives and neighbors. Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances. Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. Wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing. When possible, reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke and when to call 911.

    Where to Go:

Cooling Centers: The following are open 1:00pm – 6:00pm

    • Tompkins Center – 2333 Ogeechee Road

    Splash Pads: Open 9:00am – 8:00pm

Pools: Free and Open to Public 1:00pm – 6:00pm

    • Daffin Pool – 1301 E. Victory Drive
    • Jenkins Pool – 1800 E. DeRenne Avenue
