History

SAVANNAH, Ga.- Down by 11 points at the half and by 14 early in the second half, Savannah State chipped away at their deficit and then used a 12-0 run to take the lead for good in a 61-59 win over Lane on Tuesday night in Tiger Arena.

The win gives SSU and the Dragons a season split on their series, with Lane winning their first match-up in Jackson, Tennessee on November 22, 2025 by a score of 94-75.

With the victory, Savannah State closes the regular season with a 15-11 overall record and a 15-9 SIAC mark.

Lane led 39-28 at the half and opened the second period with a free throw and a layup to extend their lead to 14.

Down 45-31, the Tigers used a dunk by Chancellor Wilson, a layup by Brandon Johnson, a free throw by Wilson and a layup by Michael Swift to trim their deficit to single digits at 45-38 with 13:28 remaining.

Savannah State closed their margin to four before a 3-pointer by Landy gave the Dragons a 54-47 edge with just over seven minutes left.

That’s when the Tigers put on their hard hats and boots and went to work by scoring the next 12 points.

A jumper by Zyere Edwards started the run followed by back-to-back jumpers and two free throws by Javonte Landy. Edwards added a layup and Wilson closed the spurt with a layup that gave SSU a 59-54 lead with 1:08 showing on the clock.

Lane made a layup and a pair of free throws to make the score 59-58 but a layup by Wilson gave the Tigers a 61-58 lead with 14 seconds left.

The Dragons made a free throw with two seconds left but could not get any closer.

Savannah State opened the contest by scoring the first eight points with a layup by Kelvin Cochran and 3-pointers by Landy and Davis before Lane was able to tie the score at 8-8.

A mini-run gave the Tigers a 14-8 advantage before Lane battled back to tie the game at 16 with 8:17 left in the half.

The game was tied at 18 and again at 23 before the Dragons strung together a 12-0 run to take a 35-23 lead with 1:36 on the clock.

SSU’s deficit grew to 14 before a 3-pointer by Landy with four seconds remaining sent the teams into intermission with Lane leading 39-28.

The Tigers won the rebounding battle 46 to 38.

Landy was the only Savannah State player in double figures with 17 points while Wilson just missed a double-double with ten rebounds to go with his nine points.

Edwards also had nine points while Davis and Swift scored seven points apiece. Cochran and Johnson added four points each and James Leach and Braylon Jackson both chipped in two points.

Savannah State will now turn their attentions to the SIAC Men’s Basketball Championship, presented by Toyota, where they will be the East Division’s #3 seed. The Tigers will host West Divison #6 seed Kentucky State in an Opening Round matchup on Saturday, February 28 at 1 p.m. inside Tiger Arena.

During the regular season, SSU defeated the Thorobreds 80-72 in Tiger Arena on December 6, 2025 while Kentucky State defeated the Tigers 78-75 in Frankfort on January 31, 2026.
