Savannah Youth Council Inducts 32 New Members at Annual Ceremony
SAVANNAH – The City of Savannah formally inducted 32 eighth-grade students into the Savannah Youth Council (SYC) Thursday at the Coastal Georgia Center.
The annual ceremony, led by the City’s Human Services Department, marked the commencement of a year of leadership, civic engagement, community service, and personal development for inductees. Families, City officials, and community stakeholders were on hand as students accepted the responsibility of adequately representing perspectives of Savannah’s youth.
Created by Savannah City Council in 2004 and currently under the guidance of Mayor Van R. Johnson II, the Savannah Youth Council offers youth participants opportunities to engage with municipal government, enhance leadership skills, and actively contribute to the community. Thursday’s induction ceremony underscored the City of Savannah’s ongoing commitment to empowering youth and cultivating the next generation of community leaders.
“Each student contributes a distinct perspective and significant potential to the Savannah Youth Council,” said Mayor Van R. Johnson, II. “We are pleased to welcome them and anticipate their growth as leaders, their commitment to serving the community, and their role in helping to shape Savannah’s future in a way that only they can.”
The program, currently led by Comia Flynn, Human Services program coordinator and lead advisor of the SYC, continues to expand since its inception more than two decades ago.
“Induction represents a pivotal moment, initiating a transformative leadership experience,” said Flynn. “These students have chosen to embrace leadership through service, and we look forward to supporting their development as informed and engaged young leaders.”
Throughout the year, Savannah Youth Council members will interact with City officials, explore municipal departments, participate in community service projects, and expand their understanding of local government and civic duty.
