Savannah Chatham County Public School System (SCCPS) Update:

Key takeaways
  • SCCPSS plans to operate on regular schedules Monday unless forecast changes require communication by 2:30pm Sunday.
  • District canceled or postponed Saturday district-sponsored events or transportation based on expected afternoon snow.
  • SCCPSS prepared for extreme cold: buses tested early and maintenance checking heating to ensure warm, safe facilities.

SCCPSS staff have been monitoring the forecast for this weekend in consultation with the National Weather Service.  At this time, the forecast calls for precipitation on Saturday that is expected to clear out by Sunday morning.  While temperatures will be extremely cold, black ice is not expected to be a widespread roadway hazard on Monday.

At this time the district plans to operate on our regular schedules Monday.  On Saturday, any SCCPSS sponsored event being held at a district facility or requiring district transportation will either be canceled or postponed based on the forecast for snow Saturday afternoon.  We will continue to monitor the weather throughout the weekend.  If there is a need to make any operational changes for Monday due to a change in the expected forecast, we will communicate that to our families no later than 2:30pm on Sunday.

We want to remind our parents to send children to school on Monday dressed warmly in preparation for the frigid temperatures. The health and safety of our students and staff is our highest priority. Extreme cold can be dangerous if students aren’t prepared for it.

Savannah-Chatham County Public Schools are prepared for colder weather and we have taken several steps to ensure that we meet the needs of our students and staff.

  • Our transportation teams are running buses ahead of time to confirm they start and operate properly in low temperatures to help ensure safe transportation.
  • Our maintenance teams are monitoring building temperatures and checking heating systems to ensure warm facilities.

We hope our families stay safe and warm and thank you for your support of Savannah-Chatham County Public Schools.
