In this exclusive conversation with Heart & Soul Magazine, Talley reflects on the moments that shaped his artistic vision, the lessons that continue to fuel his creativity, and the legacy he hopes to leave through the power of film.What first sparked your passion for acting and filmmaking, and when did you realize storytelling would become your life’s purpose?

At just six years old, everything changed when I watched The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. Seeing Will Smith on television sparked something in me that I couldn’t fully explain at the time. I remember turning to my mother and saying, “I want to be like him.” That simple moment became the foundation of a lifelong dream.

As I grew older, my father introduced me to films that expanded my imagination and forever shaped my artistic perspective. Classics like The Godfather and Mel Brooks’ Spaceballs opened my eyes to the limitless possibilities of storytelling. Will Smith inspired me to become an actor, but it was the genius of Mel Brooks that inspired me to become a filmmaker—to write, direct, produce, and ultimately star in stories born from my own vision. From that point forward, storytelling wasn’t simply a passion; it became my calling.

Your career has taken you from in front of the camera to behind it. How has your experience as an actor shaped your vision and approach as a director and writer?

Being an actor taught me that the greatest lessons often happen when the cameras aren’t rolling. Whether I was backstage during a theatrical production or waiting between takes on set, I found myself closely observing every aspect of the creative process. I became fascinated by watching an idea evolve from a simple concept into a fully realized production.

That perspective has been invaluable as a director and writer. Having stood in an actor’s shoes allows me to create an environment built on collaboration, trust, and respect. Every story I tell is influenced by my own experiences, the films that shaped me, and my appreciation for every person who helps bring a vision to life.

You earned the prestigious Irene Ryan Award early in your career. Looking back, how did that recognition influence your confidence and creative journey?

Receiving the Irene Ryan Award was a defining moment in my career. It was one of the first times I truly believed that my talent and dedication could take me farther than I had imagined.

That recognition reinforced my confidence and reminded me that success is earned through discipline, preparation, and an unwavering work ethic. It became the first major milestone in a journey that continues to challenge me to grow creatively and professionally.

Your debut feature film, The Rough Patch, explores the complexities of life’s challenges. Without giving too much away, what inspired this story, and what do you hope audiences take away from it?

Much of The Rough Patch was inspired by my own experiences growing up, particularly the challenges and memorable moments of high school. I also drew inspiration from the coming-of-age comedies that defined my generation—films that entertained while reminding us that growing up is rarely simple.

My hope is that audiences have fun watching it. Sometimes the greatest gift a film can offer is joy, laughter, and an opportunity to escape for a while. If viewers leave with a smile and reconnect with the feeling those classic coming-of-age films gave us, then I’ve accomplished exactly what I set out to do.

As the founder of Talley Bros. Productions, what kinds of stories are you most passionate about bringing to the screen, and why are those narratives important today?

I’m passionate about telling stories that are often overlooked—the stories of people and communities that deserve to be seen. Growing up in Detroit, I understand what it feels like to be underestimated, and that perspective continues to influence the stories I choose to tell.

Whether it’s comedy, drama, action, or horror, I’m drawn to underdog narratives because they reflect resilience, hope, and determination. My next film, Polo Sporting Goods, is set in Paterson, New Jersey—a city rich in culture, history, and community, yet unfamiliar to many people outside its borders. I want audiences to discover places like Paterson and realize that extraordinary stories exist everywhere. At our core, we’re all connected by shared experiences, no matter where we come from.

Your next feature, Polo Sporting Goods, is already generating excitement. What can audiences expect from this project, and how does it represent your growth as a filmmaker?

Audiences can expect an emotionally charged, action-packed story centered on loyalty, betrayal, and the lasting influence of a cult-classic hip-hop album that became legendary within New Jersey’s underground music scene.

This project reflects my growth because it demonstrates my willingness to challenge myself creatively. I never want to be confined to a single genre. Whether I’m making audiences laugh, keeping them on the edge of their seats, or leaving them with questions long after the credits roll, my goal is always to create stories that resonate on a deeper level.

The entertainment industry is constantly evolving. How do you stay authentic to your creative vision while navigating the business side of Hollywood?

My faith in God is the foundation of everything I do. I entered this industry because I believe storytelling is one of the gifts God placed inside me, and I trust Him to guide every step of my journey.

Staying authentic means trusting my instincts, remaining a student of the craft, and surrounding myself with people who challenge and encourage me to grow. I’m grateful for my family, my mentors, and everyone God has placed in my life. Their wisdom reminds me that success isn’t just about achievement—it’s about remaining true to your purpose.

When people look back on Justin Talley’s body of work years from now, what do you hope they say about the stories you chose to tell and the legacy you leave behind?

I hope people remember me as someone who was never afraid to take risks or challenge expectations. I want my work to reflect courage, originality, and a commitment to telling stories that matter.

One quote from Nipsey Hussle has stayed with me throughout my journey: “The highest human act is to inspire.” That philosophy has become my personal mission. If my films encourage even one young filmmaker to believe in their voice, pursue their vision, and tell the stories only they can tell, then I will have created the kind of legacy that truly matters.
