City of Savannah: Official News, Events & Community Updates

    Key takeaways
    • City and community partners expanding shelter capacity and offering warming centers for those without adequate heat.
    • Tompkins Regional Center opens 7 p.m. Monday with 45 beds, limited pet space, and on-site security.
    • Transportation assistance via CSAH Outreach Team with specific phone lines and operating hours for shelter rides.
    • Residents urged to check on elderly neighbors, bring pets indoors, and follow cold-weather safety and pipe-protection tips.

SAVANNAH – Savannah is expected to experience dangerously cold temperatures from Monday night, Jan. 26, through Tuesday morning, Jan. 27, as cold weather advisory takes effect through the area. Overnight and early morning temperatures, combined with strong winds, could feel like low to mid-teens.

Because of these conditions, the City and its community partners are taking extra steps to help keep people safe. Shelter capacity is being expanded, warming center space is available, and transportation assistance will be provided for individuals experiencing homelessness or anyone without adequate heat.

The Tompkins Regional Center, 2333 Ogeechee Road, will open Monday at 7 p.m., closing at 7 a.m. the following morning for residents in need of a last resort overnight shelter. 45 beds will be available and up to 10 pets, under the owner’s control, are welcome. Capacity at the warming center will be limited. Please see below a full list of available warming centers, shelters and resources.

    Cold Weather Safety Tips
Residents are encouraged to take precautions during this period of extreme cold by limiting time outdoors, checking on elderly neighbors or those without adequate heat, and bringing pets indoors. It’s also important to know the signs of cold-related illnesses and seek help immediately if symptoms appear.

Protecting Pipes During a Hard Freeze
To help prevent freezing and bursting pipes, residents should allow both cold and hot water to drip slowly from faucets during overnight hours. Opening cabinets under sinks can help warm air circulate around plumbing, and insulating exposed pipes—especially in unheated areas—provides added protection. Homeowners should also ensure they know where their main water shutoff valve is in case of an emergency.
