The Savannah Steel saw their win streak come to an end Friday night after Greensboro used a dominant third quarter to rally for a 92-78 win at Enmarket Arena.
SAVANNAH, Ga. —
The Savannah Steel saw a strong first half slip away Friday night, falling 92-78 to the Greensboro Groove at Enmarket Arena in the fourth of five regular-season meetings.
Despite the setback, Savannah still holds a 3-1 lead in the season series.
The Steel opening the night with energy and controlling the first half, building an 11-point lead in the opening quarter before taking a 22-14 advantage into the second. Savannah kept that momentum going and carried a 42-35 lead into halftime.
The game turned in the third quarter, when Greensboro used a major scoring run to swing the momentum. The Groove outscored Savannah 36-14 in the period, using a 17-3 stretch to erase the Steel’s halftime lead and take control.
Savannah battling in the fourth and scoring 22 points, but the third-quarter surge by Greensboro proving too much to overcome.
Harmoni Turner led the Steel with 17 points, while Alisia Jenkins and Zee Spearman each added 11. Iyana Moore, Lauryn Taylor and Que Morrison chipped in nine points apiece, and Dyaisha Fair finished with six points, three assists and four rebounds off the bench.
Savannah shot 45.2 percent from the field and knocked down 9 of 20 shots from three-point range, good for 45 percent. The Steel’s biggest struggle came at the free throw line, where they went 13-for-25.
The Groove also capitalizing on Savannah’s 15 turnovers, turning them into 17 points, while holding a 40-31 edge on the glass.
Even with the loss, the Steel remain in control of the regular-season series and will have a quick chance to respond. Savannah returns to the floor against Greensboro on Sunday, July 5, with tipoff set for 3 p.m.
