Black Travelers: Explore Culture, Adventure & Connection

    Key takeaways
    • Production filmed on-location across Los Angeles County, notably in Burbank and San Fernando Valley, creating grounded, unsettling everyday settings.
    • Iconic real businesses appear onscreen: The Green Man (crystal shop) and Cassell’s Music, which permanently closed in 2025.
    • Best time to visit is March to May and September to November when temperatures are comfortable and crowds are smaller.
    • Transportation advice: a rental car is most convenient; rideshare services and portions of the Los Angeles Metro offer alternatives.

Director Curry Barker’s “Obsession” has quickly become one of the most talked-about horror movies of 2026. Following its successful premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival and subsequent theatrical release, the supernatural thriller has attracted attention not only for its unsettling story but also for its distinctive Southern California backdrop. The film stars Michael Johnston as Bear, a lonely music store employee whose desperate wish for love unleashes increasingly terrifying consequences and Inde Navarrette as Nikki, his longtime crush. After Bear makes a wish with a magic One Wish Willow, Nikki suddenly falls in love with him. But her increasingly terrifying and obsessive acts have a horrifying twist to them.

Unlike many modern horror productions that rely heavily on soundstages and digital environments, “Obsession” embraces real-world locations to create a grounded sense of unease. Barker and his team filmed throughout Los Angeles County, using actual neighborhoods, storefronts and businesses to make the supernatural elements feel more believable. The result is a horror film that transforms familiar places into settings filled with tension and dread. For fans hoping to visit the locations seen on screen, several of the movie’s most memorable sites are open to the public.

Check Out The Los Angeles Locations Behind ‘Obsession’

Key Scenes: The film effectively grounds its supernatural horror by using real, recognizable locations across Southern California. For instance, Bear’s home (which serves as the backdrop for many of the movie’s key moments) was created by transforming a standard residential property in Burbank. Production designer Vivian Gray reshaped both the interior and exterior to reflect Bear’s isolation and deteriorating emotional state.

Best Time to Visit: The best time to explore these filming locations is between March and May or September and November. This is when Southern California temperatures are generally comfortable and crowds are smaller. Burbank and North Hollywood are especially pleasant during spring, when visitors can comfortably walk between shops, restaurants and nearby attractions.

Transportation Options: A rental car is the most convenient way to get across Los Angeles County. However, rideshare services such as Uber and Lyft are widely available throughout Burbank, North Hollywood and San Fernando. Visitors staying near Hollywood or Universal City can also use portions of the Los Angeles Metro system to reach many surrounding neighborhoods, then complete the journey by rideshare or taxi.

Most of “Obsession” was filmed throughout Los Angeles County, with production centered around Burbank, San Fernando and nearby communities in the San Fernando Valley. According to Elite Daily, filming for “Obsession” took under a month in 2024. Rather than constructing large sets, the filmmakers chose authentic California locations that would reinforce the movie’s intimate and unsettling atmosphere. This was also a major score in terms of budget, since the production was working with relatively conservative funds.

Several real businesses also appear throughout the movie. The Green Man, a metaphysical shop located at 824 North Hollywood Way in Burbank, served as the crystal store where Bear encounters the mysterious One Wish Willow. Another notable filming location is Cassell’s Music in San Fernando, which was used to depict Bear’s workplace and bring a sense of everyday realism to his character. The longtime shop carries a fun dose of nostalgia for movie buffs, having previously appeared in other iconic productions like “Wayne’s World.” Sadly, its time as a local landmark has come to an end; shortly after the crew wrapped filming for Obsession in 2024, the beloved music store permanently shut its doors in 2025.

Things to Do: Universal Studios Hollywood remains one of the area’s biggest attractions, and it’s located only a short drive from several “Obsession” filming locations. Movie lovers may also enjoy visiting the Warner Bros. Studio Tour, which offers a behind-the-scenes look at one of the industry’s most historic production facilities. For a more local experience, visitors can explore North Hollywood’s arts district. It features theaters, galleries, cafes and live entertainment venues. Griffith Park, one of the largest urban parks in the United States, is another excellent day-trip destination. It offers hiking trails, city views and access to the famous Griffith Observatory.

Where to Eat: The most obvious stop is Lil’ Toni’s in North Hollywood, which Reddit fans have identified as a filming location in the movie. Locals have considered the restaurant a favorite for years. Another popular local landmark is Porto’s Bakery & Cafe in Burbank. Although it does not appear in the film, it is located near The Green Man.

Where to Stay: If you want a taste of historic Tinseltown glamour right in the center of the action, The Hollywood Roosevelt puts you steps away from the Walk of Fame and features a legendary, vibrant rooftop pool scene. Travelers seeking a hip, creative energy tend to drift toward downtown, where The Hoxton, Downtown LA, offers gorgeous, vintage-inspired design and an incredible rooftop restaurant without an outrageous price tag.
