City of Savannah Opening Cooling Centers Amid Forecasted Heat Advisory Weekend

SAVANNAH – In anticipation of the National Weather Service’s forecasted heat advisories, the City of Savannah is opening cooling facilities for residents on Saturday, June 27, and Sunday, June 28, 2026.

    What’s Happening:

    • Building heat and humidity expected through the weekend and into early next week
    • Temperatures will reach the upper 90s and possibly triple digits, especially Sunday
    • Heat index values are forecast to be 105 – 110 degrees possible for some areas, especially along the coast
    • Coastal southeast Georgia and coastal South Carolina are impacted areas.
    • The occurrence of thunderstorms could disrupt heating and peak heat index values
    • Extreme heat and high humidity may cause heat-related illnesses.

    What to Do:

To reduce risk during outdoor work/activities, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency. Call 911!

Drink plenty of fluids, refrain from direct exposure to the sun, and tend to relatives and neighbors. Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances. Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. Wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing. When possible, reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
